what WAS in your fridge?

February 12, 2011

These days when we invite people over to eat, if they know us at all, they know to expect something healthy. A few years ago that was certainly NOT the case. As adults James and I have had to decide for ourselves what it is that we feel comfortable putting into our bodies on a daily basis. It has definitely been a process. We obviously did not start out knowing what we know now. It has involved lots of studying, questioning, experimenting, etc. Over the years my ideas of health and nutrition have changed many times.

Here is what is on my mind right now: My parents’ fridge when I was a child. What was in it? Let me show you….

and of course, TONS of these.

I mean TONS. We actually never ran out of either of these items. I grew up in a very kid-friendly neighborhood. All of my friends as well as my brother’s knew that they could always get a frozen pizza and Big K at our house so my mom continued to keep them stocked. I can remember summer days when I would literally have a Big K and pizza for lunch and then repeat at dinner time. YIKES! I won’t even begin to break down the ingredients in these items. That would just be depressing for me to think of how much of it I actually put into my body.

The great news is though what is done is done, it is not too late for us to make changes. So we have. I still love pizza. I just choose to make my own with incredible ingredients and only eat it sparingly.

So, what WAS in your fridge? Leave a comment telling me what the staples were in your house growing up. Do you still eat the same way? Or have you made changes?

i was always chagrined that we only had smucker’s natural peanut butter in our house instead of the “moms love it” jif. but now, what do i buy?…natural peanut butter! (sometimes even smucker’s, but i prefer maranatha!)

Ha. We like Maranatha too. Recently we have just been doing the almond butter. It took a while to grow on me, but now I really enjoy it.

When I was a kid my mom didn’t serve us sugar until we got into elementary school. She used honey instead. We ate tons of apple sauce, orange juice, lots of veggie casseroles, and are whole family loved tacos! My mom made all of our baked goods from scratch, which had lots of sugar in them, but were better than the store bought cookies and cakes. I only drank water and apple juice until I was in high school my brother and I started drinking cokes. My mom always tried to serve us healthy food. I think she did a pretty sinkin’ good job πŸ™‚ My knowledge on food has grown since then, but I pretty much eat the same way I did as a kid.

That is AMAZING! Way to go Mrs. W. That is probably one of the main reasons that you and Luke are so healthy and full of life!

What was in my fridge growing up? Anything that could be popped in the microwave. Tons of bags of chips. Cereal. Cheez-It’s. White bread. Cheese slices. Ice cream.
Healthy food tastes SOOO much better! πŸ˜‰

I was raised by a very healthy mother. Never allowed candy, surgary cereals, little debbies, or frozen treats. I was rarely taken to the Dr. unless it was an emergency. I swallowed every homeopathic remedy (spelling) that was available. Melaluca (spelling) was scattered around the house. Basically, all the things I resented my mother for is now the ruled I follow. She raised me right. I love the nutritional wisdom she passed on. πŸ™‚

That is really cool Michelle. I love hearing stories like that. Obviously, our boys are too little now to really tell us how they feel about how we are raising them. But it seems to me like anyone I have ever spoken to who was raised eating real/natural foods ends up either sticking with it or at least going back to it after a short time exploring how processed food makes them feel and look.

Yeah, I pretty much ate crap growing up… Now wonder I had so many allergies. My brother and I could go through an entire (huge) bag of Totino’s Pizza Rolls in one sitting.
